Summers go too fast, especially when an early chunk of it was flooded out by rain of seemingly Biblical proportions, like what happened this year. Alas, though we still have three more weeks until the autumnal equinox, earth's official end to summer, Labor Day weekend let's us know that outdoor festivals and concerts are coming to an end, summer vacations are gone and school's beginning which for parents of school children is the most wonderful time of the year. Major League Baseball's into a pennant chase with teams gearing up for the playoffs and the National Football League will start playing games for real this week.

Yes, the end of summer sucks, but the sports fan in us knows we're saying goodbye to a time where three of the four major North American sports aren't playing and we're getting close to a time when those four forces will combine for a harmonic conversion in the sports world. Very soon we'll be talking the World Series along with the NFL in full gear plus the start of the NBA and NHL regular seasons.

Hockey fans can take solace in knowing that training camp starts next week and the regular season is just a month away. For Sabres fans, the 5th Annual Prospects Challenges begins this Friday as the Sabres host the Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins in round-robin tourney.

Here's the schedule from Sabres PR:

Friday, Sept. 6

• Pittsburgh vs. Boston, 3:30 p.m.

• Buffalo vs. New Jersey, 7 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 7

• New Jersey vs. Pittsburgh, 3:30 p.m.

• Buffalo vs. Boston, 7 p.m.

Monday, Sept. 9

• Boston vs. New Jersey, 9:30 a.m.

• Buffalo vs. Pittsburgh, 12:30 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for the games.

Happy Labor Day, everyone!
