On to today’s column…

It’s the last week of August and the rookies report in just 10 days for their physicals. After a few days of practice, the first preseason hockey of the year will take place at Ford Ice Center as the Predators host the 2019 NHL Prospects Showcase. The rookie camps for Washington, Carolina and Tampa Bay will gather in Antioch for a round robin tournament.

The Baby Preds will play Tampa Bay on Saturday at 4pm, Washington Sunday at 1pm and then complete the cycle with a tilt against Carolina at 1pm on Tuesday. The rest of the schedule will feature the Caps and Canes at 1pm Saturday, Bolts and Canes at 4pm Sunday and Caps and Bolts at 1pm on Tuesday 9/10. All four teams will practice on Monday. Ticket information for these games is available at the Predators website.

Pred Nation will get a look at prospects that they have seen develop over the past few seasons like Freddy Allard, Yakov Trenin and Rem Pitlick. We will also get a look at this year’s first round pick Phillip Tomasino and 2nd rounder Egor Afanasyev along will other familiar names like Dante Fabbro and Eeli Tolvanen.

These types of prospect tournaments end up being very important in the development of these young players… and for some players that we have been watching over the past few seasons… a chance to finally break through into NHL roster consideration. Players like Fabbro and Tolvanen are locks to be on the Preds roster, either now or in the very near future, but players like Trenin and Allard have been in the system for quite awhile and need breakthrough moments. That is the importance of this camp, this tournament.

Dominate in this tournament and you get the attention of Peter Laviolette, dominate in this tournament and you get extra attention in training camp, dominate in this tournament and your name moves up on the list of callups when the season gets going.

Ten days to go until things get real.
