As anticipated, the Golden Knights' Restricted Free Agent goaltender has signed a new contract, avoiding arbitration. Malcolm Subban's new deal is a one-year contract, worth $850,000. This deal won't blow the roof off anyone's house, but it was a priority for the team and quite frankly, for Subban.

Malcolm Subban had a solid season as the Golden Knights’ back-up netminder

With the one-year deal, Subban remains in Vegas as Marc-Andre Fleury's understudy. At just 25-years-old, Subban is one of the most valuable back-up goaltenders in the league. At the cost, the team would be hard-pressed to find better value. While his play clearly outweighs his contract, this one-year deal comes as no surprise. In my last article, I explained that a one-year deal would be a fine way to push Subban's eventual raise to a time with more financial flexibility.

Question Marks Remain for the Vegas Golden Knights

With the off-season in full swing, the Vegas Golden Knights have completed the 2019 Entry Draft, Development Camp, and made it through the opening of NHL Free Agency. While the dust has somewhat settled from the initial pandemonium, one trip to Twitter makes it abundantly clear that George McPhee's final summer as the Golden Knights' General Manager is far from over.

As a former first-round draft pick, Subban has the pedigree of a future franchise goaltender and will only benefit from continuing to play alongside Marc-Andre Fleury. Subban finished last season with an 8-10-2 record despite a solid 2.93 GAA and .902 save percentage. Those numbers are certainly adequate for a back-up, increasingly so when taking an all-around dismal team performance in Calgary (7 GA) into account. He carried the load quite well when Fleury missed approximately a month of time due to injury. Further boosting his resume, Subban is a career 16/16 on shootout opportunities, only further displaying his high-level ability.

In three short seasons, Fleury's $7 million per season deal will expire and at that time, the Golden Knights should be ready to turn the net over to Subban. Barring any injury or developmental set-back, the Golden Knights will have stability in goal for years to come.

“We are pleased to announce this one-year contract for Malcolm. He’s been a valuable contributor to our team over the last two seasons. We are excited to continue to work with Malcolm and help him reach his full potential as an NHL goaltender.”
