Yesterday the New Jersey Devils added a future star in Jack Hughes.
Today? They added an established star, snagging defenseman PK Subban from the Nashville Predators.
Going the other way are defenders Steven Santini, Jeremy Davies, and a pair of 2nd round picks (34th overall and a 2020 selection).
I know peak Subban is a thing of the past. I know he carries a massive cap hit not many teams can afford. But for the Devils to land Subban for a fringe NHL defender, a B prospect, and a pair of 2nd round lottery tickets is unbelievably good.
Over the last three years, Subban has averaged 50 points per 82 games and posted strong on-ice numbers. It's not like the Devils are acquiring a washed up player here. He still has gas left in the tank and easily becomes the best defenseman on the team.
That Subban's contract expires before a) he is in clear decline and; b) Hughes, Jesper Boqvist, Ty Smith and co. are in line for big raises makes this deal even more perfect.
I'll have much more in the coming weeks and months, but this is a homerun deal for the Devils.
