In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on the Jacob Trouba trade.

I think this is a bad trade for the Jets and a great one for the Rangers.

I understand Trouba wanting out complicated matters but a near 24-year-old depth defender and a mid-to-late 1st round pick for a top-3 defenseman in his prime is hardly a quality return, let alone an acceptable one.

The Rangers were desperate for help on defense. In Trouba they added arguably the best blueliner on the market – one who will fit in with the team's high-end young core long-term – without giving anything of consequence off the roster. The draft pick isn't really an issue considering the amount of quality prospects they already have in the system, and the fact they still have three top-62 picks in this year's draft – including 2nd overall.

With the likes of Trouba, Kaapo Kakko, Vitali Kravtsov and Adam Fox, among others, joining the Rangers as early as next season, things are really looking up for them.

Trevor Shackles

The Rangers are the clear winners here. Think about this from their perspective: they added a top-four (potentially even top pairing) defenseman in his prime, and all they had to give up was a young defenseman who has had poor results so far and the 20th overall pick, which probably won't become as good as Trouba. There is essentially no downside because they immediately upgraded their roster and still have their own first round pick in the draft.

I was surprised the Jets couldn't get a bit more just because right-handed defensemen are valued so highly in the NHL, although I guess it's hard to find a team willing to move an NHL-ready defenseman in return. Still though, Jeff Gorton looks like a genius here by adding to his roster without giving up much---and I don't think he's close to being finished this summer.

Sean Maloughney

I mean.... this isn't even a real question is it? The Rangers took the Jets out to pasture on this one. The Jets originally traded their 1st round pick (20th overall) in exchange for Kevin Hayes and Brendan Lemieux. Hayes scored a mere 5 goals and 8 assists in 20 with the Jets before being flipped again for a 5th round pick.

The Jets now reacquire that 1st round pick in exchange for a right shot 25 year old defenseman who had 50 points last season. It seemed clear that Trouba had no interest in re-signing with the Jets, but this was the best deal that Chevy was able to muster? I am shocked that other teams were not prepared to offer more. This feels like a panic move if I ever saw one.

It's likely the Jets will now offer Myers a contract but they still need to figure out the Laine and Connor contracts so the Jets aren't out of the woods yet in terms of navigating the cap. If this deal is any indicator, other teams should be lining up to call Cheveldayoff and see what else they can shake loose.

Peter Tessier

This was the end of a saga that should have been dealt with ages ago and in a much better fashion given the stakes.

The Rangers won even if this was for a rental of a year. If the sign him it's even better but at the end of the day the all the Jets have to show for 6 years of Trouba is their own 1st round pick, 50 days of Kevin Hayes, and a 5th round pick plus Neal Pionk.

You tell me how that happened?
