After the Michigan State Spartans season came to an end in this year's NCAA playoffs, the 2025-2026 Big 10 Goalie of the year and Red Wings second round pick Trey Augustine chose to finally ink a deal with Detroit, fully bringing the 21-year-old hometown netminder into the organization's fold.

Augustine, the Red Wings second round pick in 2023 has spent the last three seasons as MSU's top netminder, and has shown himself to be one of the top college players in the nation. After coming up short of a NCAA Championship last year in his sophomore season, Augustine elected to rejoin the Spartans for his junior season, and has improved on an already impressive resume since being drafted.

The junior netminder had a .929 sv% and 2.11 GAA across a 24-9-1 record and is in consideration for not only the Mike Richter Award, given to the NCAA's top goaltender, but the Hobey Baker Award, presented to college hockey's best player in the nation. This is Augustine's second year as a finalist for the Mike Richter Award, having won it last season, and is a semi-finalist for the Hobey Baker alongside fellow Red Wings prospect Max Plante.

The Red Wings signed Augustine to a three year, 1.075 million dollar AAV deal starting next season. The number is is generous for a young prospect, showing how highly Steve Yzerman and co. value the South Lyon native.

Augustine will report to the Red Wings AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids for the remainder of their season on a tryout contract. With Augustine, the Griffins will have three goalies with real NHL potential backstopping their net, joining Sebastian Cossa and Michal Postava, who have led the Griffins to one of the best seasons in team history.

Grand Rapids has already clinched a playoff berth, though with Postava and Cossa established in the current rotation, it is yet to be seen where, and when Augustine will make his debut.
