Why the Blues Could Listen on Robert Thomas… and the NHL Teams Ready to Pounce (Eklund)

On Robert Thomas...

The St. Louis Blues center has evolved from a slick, pass-first playmaker into a legitimate top-line center . Over the last few tears, Thomas has taken on tougher matchups, more defensive responsibility, and a leadership role…all while producing at a near point-per-game pace.  He’s also locked into a long-term deal at an $8.125M AAV — a contract that reflects his value but still looks very reasonable compared to what he would get as a UFA now as a true No. 1 center entering his prime.

So why would St. Louis even consider it?

That’s where timing and direction come into play. The Blues sit in bit of an NHL no man's land,… competitive, but not quite dangerous. If GM Doug Armstrong determines the roster needs a more decisive reset, Thomas represents the kind of asset that could reshape the organization in one move. A true top-line center in his mid-20s under long-term control would command an enormous return..likely a combination of top prospects, serious premium picks, and NHL-ready talent.

If Thomas ever does become available, the market would be instant….and intense.

Who wants him?  It would probably be easier to list the teams who don't want him, but I'm going to list the teams now that need him the most, and have the prospect pool to make such a deal…

Carolina Hurricanes

Thomas fits their system perfectly….Carolina has long searched for a high-end offensive center who can control play without sacrificing defensive structure. His puck possession and tempo control would thrive in Rod Brind’Amour’s scheme, and the Hurricanes have the prospect capital to engage in a blockbuster without stripping their NHL core.

New Jersey Devils

The Devils are built on speed and skill, but playoff hockey demands them to be even stronger  down the middle. Adding Thomas would give New Jersey an embarrassment of riches at center and provide insulation when games tighten up. His defensive evolution and composure would be invaluable in a long series.

Detroit Red Wings

Steve Yzerman has stockpiled assets and resisted shortcuts — but elite centers in their prime rarely become available. Thomas would instantly elevate Detroit’s forward group and align perfectly with their competitive window. If Yzerman decides it’s time to strike, this is exactly the type of player he would target.

Philadelphia Flyers

This is where things get especially interesting.  The Flyers are clearly moving out of the rebuild phase and into something more ambitious. The struggle as of late is real, but the reality is young  sold, but young teams do this..  They can look incredible for a month and then awful for a month..The truth is really in the middle…which is kind of where they have landed…They are a team who can beat Vegas in Vegas and then blow a three goal lead two nights later in Utah.  Its an emotional roller coaster for their fans for sure…

But no matter how far along the rebuild is or isn’t, the one thing they absolutely lack is a true, high-end, play-driving center to anchor the lineup for the next decade. Robert Thomas checks every box… He’s responsible defensively, elite in transition, and capable of elevating wingers . His contract fits neatly into the Flyers’ long-term cap picture, and his age aligns with their emerging core.

From Philadelphia’s perspective, this would be a statement move — one that signals the rebuild is over and the next phase has begun. The Flyers also possess the type of assets St. Louis would demand: high-end prospects, multiple first-round picks, and young NHL players on manageable contracts.

But will the Blues actually make this move?

None of this suggests the Blues are eager to move Robert Thomas…elite centers are not replaceable. But if St. Louis decides that reshaping the roster is the path forward, Thomas is the asset that could change everything.

And if/when his name ever truly hits the market… the league will line up.
