Canucks Deal Kiefer Sherwood to San Jose: Trade Analysis and Grades

The Vancouver Canucks are currently sitting in last place in the NHL and facing an inevitable rebuild, regardless of what ownership and upper management seem to believe. While a "forced retool" might still be the narrative, Vancouver is not competitive now, nor will they be in the immediate future.

With the Olympic Roster Freeze running from February 4th to 22nd, the Canucks chose to beat the buzzer and get a jump on the trade market. The decision? Dealing breakout forward Kiefer Sherwood to the San Jose Sharks.

After Sherwood rejected a long-term extension offer, the Canucks had few options remaining but to move the forward. It is a significant loss on the ice, in just 44 games this season, Sherwood has posted 17 goals and 6 assists, but a necessary move for the franchise's future.

Below, we break down the deal for both teams and analyze why it makes sense.

Vancouver Canucks Analysis

According to initial reports, the Canucks set a high bar for Sherwood, asking for a first-round pick and a top prospect. However, once the team pulled their heads out of the clouds, they opted to prioritize a quantity of assets rather than holding out for a perfect return.

Acquiring two 2nd round picks allows Vancouver to recoup a selection for next year, which they had previously traded and adds a second pick to their arsenal for this year.

The Return: Cole Clayton and Draft Capital

In the deal, Vancouver also received Cole Clayton, a 25-year-old career AHL defensive defender. Clayton is expected to report to the Abbotsford Canucks and likely won’t play a significant role at the NHL level.

For Vancouver, this deal accomplishes three things:

It prevents losing Sherwood for nothing as a free agent. It eases the load on potential Trade Deadline moves later. It actively helps the "Tank."

With Sherwood off the roster, the Canucks significantly increase their chances of finishing last overall. This positions them perfectly for a chance to draft generational talents like Gavin McKenna or Keaton Verhoeff.

Grade: B+

San Jose Sharks Analysis

For San Jose, this deal is a message to their fan base more than anything. The team feels that after years of rebuilding, they are finally ready to commit to winning now. With the Sharks currently sitting in the final Wild Card spot, this move provides much-needed reinforcements for superstar Macklin Celebrini.

Supporting the Core

With so many prospects currently in their system, this move allows San Jose to maintain the development track of their young players while supplementing the NHL roster immediately. Celebrini currently sits with 40 more points than his next nearest teammate and is in desperate need of support. With his current stats, Sherwood instantly slots in as 2nd in goals for the Sharks.

Low Risk, High Reward

Crucially, the Sharks now have the ability to evaluate how Sherwood fits with the team before committing to a long-term contract. Should the Sharks fall out of the playoff race, they also retain the flexibility to flip Sherwood at the deadline, making this an incredibly low-risk deal for them.

Grade: B

The Verdict

This is a classic case of two teams coming together with mutual interest and executing a deal that works for both sides. With one team looking to climb the standings and the other looking to remain locked in at the bottom, this trade makes complete sense.
