Maple Leafs Collapse, Berube Calls Out Leadership: Treliving Eyes Mason Marchment in Trade Rumor (NHL News)

Matias Maccelli waits for the puck

The Toronto Maple Leafs are reeling after an embarrassing 6-2 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night. More shocking than the final score, however, was the palpable lack of effort from the team, a failure that prompted both Coach Craig Berube and Scott Laughton to publicly call out the leadership group.

While a pattern of overall failure is not new territory for the Toronto organization, the timing of this collapse is catching the fanbase off guard. We were prepared for the annual playoff implosion, but few, myself included, were ready to admit just how dreadful this year's team is. The Maple Leafs currently sit 14th in the Eastern Conference, one point out of last place and 23rd overall across the league, cementing their position closer to the bottom than to a playoff berth.

The team's struggles have inevitably led to significant Toronto Maple Leafs Trade Rumors. According to multiple reports, General Manager Brad Treliving is already shopping offseason acquisition Matias Maccelli, who has simply not fit the current roster. The 25-year-old forward was expected to challenge for a spot alongside Auston Matthews, but has instead been a frequent healthy scratch. Maccelli has tallied 4 goals and 5 assists in 22 games this season, but the coach has clearly not been a fan.

Now, rumors are swirling that Treliving has circled back to a trade target he coveted this past offseason: veteran Seattle Kraken forward and impending unrestricted free agent Mason Marchment. Sources suggest the Leafs believe Marchment's robust, physical presence is a better match for their desired style of play than Maccelli's finesse

The addition of Marchment would likely be a welcome sight for Craig Berube. Marchment provides a physical edge, excelling on the forecheck and using his frame to retrieve the puck. While he would not provide a bump in speed, making it a wash in the speed department compared to Maccelli, the grit is appealing. In 27 games this year, Marchment has 4 goals and 9 assists. However, the one stat that raises eyebrows is his 38 giveaways, a factor that has impacted his standing in Seattle.

It appears the Leafs management is once again willing to die on the hill of their own rigid ideology, pursuing a desired style of play even when available evidence screams that it doesn't work. As much as I can appreciate that.
