The Maple Leafs are SERIOUS about bringing back Nazem Kadri. Here is why and how...

WHY THE TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS COULD LOOK TO REUNITE WITH NAZEM KADRI

UGH....Ok....we are going there....buckle up...

Why Ugh?  Well, a resolution I have for 2026 is to create a Hockeybuzz Hall of Fame for players who have been the most discussed here over the last 20 years.  The main inductees would be guys like Ollie Jokinen or Tomas Kaberle who each spent a decade in trade rumors...but some players will see themselves in the hallowed hall for being just a spitfire of constant controversy in their city....like today's topi Nazem Kadri...

He was singlehandedly blamed for at least two playoff failures that I remember...due to him taking dumb penalties that led to suspensions...

It’s been ONLY five years since Nazem Kadri last wore the blue and white, but his name continues to pop up around Toronto like a ghost that never really left. With the Calgary Flames sliding and aggressively listening on several veterans, the idea of Kadri returning to the Maple Leafs isn’t just folklore...it might actually make hockey sense.

Kadri turns 35 next season, but he remains a fiercely competitive, top-six caliber center who brings edge, playoff snarl, leadership, and the one thing the Leafs still haven’t solved: a stabilizing, physical presence down the middle behind Auston Matthews.

If the Flames truly pivot to a younger core around Connor Zary, Dustin Wolf, and their emerging defense prospects, Kadri could become one of the most compelling “win-now” acquisitions on the trade market. Here's why the Leafs would consider it — and how a deal could actually work.

1. Why the Leafs Would Want Kadri Back

A. They Still Haven’t Replaced His Role...(neither has Colorado, by the way...)

Since Kadri left, the Leafs have certainly

  • Alex Kerfoot

  • David Kämpf

  • Ryan O’Reilly (briefly)

  • Max Domi (more suited to wing)

None of these players bring Kadri’s exact combination of grit, goal scoring, matchup ability, and big-moment swagger. The Leafs’ recurring playoff problem.... getting pushed off their game and losing the middle of the ice.... is exactly what Kadri excelled at fixing in Colorado.

B. He’s a Proven Playoff Performer

Kadri’s playoff résumé since leaving Toronto is night-and-day compared to his time here. He became a game-changing piece for the Avalanche, including scoring the OT winner in the Stanley Cup Final on a broken thumb. Toronto has skill. Toronto has speed. Toronto does not have enough players who drag a team into battle. Kadri does.

C. He Checks the “Treliving Familiarity” Box

Remember: Brad Treliving is the GM who signed Kadri in Calgary. He knows the player, the personality, the leadership traits. There’s trust. And stylistically, Kadri fits exactly the kind of team Treliving keeps trying to build.

2. Would Calgary Actually Move Him?

Yes....

The Flames are retooling, not tearing down, but they’re prioritizing:

  • cap flexibility

  • draft capital

  • clearing space for younger centers

Kadri has four years left at $7 million AAV. That’s a big number for a team trying to get younger — but far more reasonable for a contender needing center depth.

3. What Toronto Would Have to Give Up

Because of Kadri’s age and contract term, the price will be lower than what his talent alone suggests, but higher if Calgary retains.

The following trade scenarios are based on discussions with two non-related GMs today...they are NOY rumors...just some educated guesses...but with guys admitted that they don't know ALL of the Leafs inner workings...

If Calgary does NOT retain salary:

  • Nick Robertson or Easton Cowan

  • Miro Holinka

  • A roster player for money purposes (Järnkrok)

This type of deal values Kadri as a veteran centerpiece but acknowledges the cap hit.

If Calgary retains $1.5–2M:

Now Kadri becomes a $5–5.5M player. The price jumps:

  • One A-level prospect (Cowan)

  • Miro Holinka

  • Cap-balancing roster player (jarnkrok)

If Calgary retains the full 50% (unlikely but possible):

Now you’re talking blockbuster:

  • Roberston

  • A top prospect (maybe Cowen or Holinka)

  • Another pick (2nd or 3rd)

  • A young roster player

The Flames will not eat half for free. You only get that if multiple teams are bidding.

Leafs Centers would be....

This would give the Leafs a playoff center group of:

  1. Auston Matthews

  2. Nazem Kadri

  3. John Tavares

  4. Roy/Laughton

That is an impressive group...

Kadri gives them:

  • a net-front presence

  • defensive reliability in chaotic games

  • the ability to win matchups without relying fully on Matthews

  • a player who gets angrier when the games get nastier

  • but he has matured and probably can stop himself before he gets a suspension....

  • PROBABLY

So.....Is this worth it?
