Trade Destinations for Steven Stamkos and Ryan O'Reilly Coming Into Focus (Eklund)

Predators Facing Reality: Stamkos, O’Reilly Emerging as Top Deadline Pieces

Steven Stamkos, at 35, is finally starting to show his age. The once-feared one-timer from the left circle simply isn’t beating goaltenders the way it used to. Seven points in 23 games tell the same story that his $8 million cap hit has been screaming all year. The chemistry that looked so promising on paper hasn’t shown up on the ice, and the power play that was supposed to be transformed by his arrival is sitting in the bottom third of the NHL.

Stamkos still has two more years after this one at $8M, and while he does control where he goes, Nashville will almost certainly need to retain close to half his cap hit to make a deal happen unless his production spikes soon.

Meanwhile, Ryan O’Reilly continues to play rock-solid hockey. His defensive awareness and faceoff dominance remain elite, but his offensive numbers have dipped… and more importantly, he’s the one Predator who could bring back significant value. At 34, with a very manageable $4.75M cap hit and no trade protection, O’Reilly is shaping up to be one of the most attractive deadline assets on the market. He could realistically net a first-round pick.

DESTINATIONS

On Stamkos...

Stamkos → Toronto (e3)

The Leafs have always wanted to bring Stammer home. They need a scoring threat in the worst way, and this almost happened once before. Stamkos still spends plenty of time in Toronto. Add in the possibility of playing alongside Tavares… who knows, maybe that sparks something.

Stamkos → Carolina (e3)

In many ways, Carolina makes the most sense for either of these players. The Canes lack veteran voices who’ve been there and won… and Rod Brind’Amour gravitates toward players who understand playoff hockey on a deep level.

O’REILLY OPTIONS

O’Reilly → Montreal (e4)

The most intriguing fit might be the Montreal Canadiens. GM Kent Hughes has been hunting for a legitimate second-line center for years. O’Reilly checks every box:• Defensive responsibility• Faceoff excellence• Playoff pedigree• Quiet, steady leadership

He’s exactly the type of player who could stabilize a young core.

O’Reilly → Detroit (e3), Stamkos → Detroit (e2)

The Red Wings sit with roughly $14 million in cap space, and O’Reilly fits their needs perfectly. As for Stamkos, the connection with Steve Yzerman is very real… it almost happened before his Nashville deal. Don’t rule it out.

Detroit is big-game hunting right now. They’ve also been linked to Quinn Hughes, who would be returning to the state where he played most of his pre-NHL hockey. Wings fans are craving a superstar to push them back into real playoff contention. O’Reilly’s two-way game and leadership could make an immediate impact.

Other Teams Circling

Sources tell me both the Stars and Jets are monitoring the O’Reilly market closely.
