Oilers in Crisis: Fans Demand Knoblauch Firing After Blowout Loss & System Failures
The Edmonton Oilers hit another low point in last night’s loss to the Buffalo Sabres, and Coach Knoblauch’s issues are reaching a breaking point.
Now past the 20-game marker, the Oilers are outside a playoff spot and show no signs of turning the ship around. Therems been numerous concerning trends emerging all year from the forwards and defence, which is focusing the blame solely on Coach Knoblauch.
Oilers fans call for Coach Knoblauch to be fired after blowout loss to Sabres
Speaking to the media after last night’s loss, Knoblauch simply had no answers. He’s not satisfied with the defence or the offence, both using new systems that he’s chosen.
Defensive zone, they had us running around. Just whether we’re getting beat to the net or just not being aggressive enough. We’re so tight in the middle, just letting them walk around. Unfortunately, not seeing a pattern.
We want to work on things like our breakouts and o-zone play. There’s a lot of things that - we can get better. A lot of things to clean up. - Coach Knoblauch
The Oilers defence hasn’t lived up anywhere near expectations this season, with almost every player taking a step back. The issue is other the back end is constant turnovers, playing Knoblauch’s system of extended breakout passes.
On its hitting the offence in a massive way. The Oilers have struggled to generate offence all year, only managing 10 shots halfway through last night’s game. So far this year, this is the worst Oilers offence at 5v5 since before McDavid was on the roster.

To take a high flying offensive team with McDavid and Draisaitl and turn them into low-even players is an astounding decision from Knoblauch.
Oilers fans are getting sick of his systems, and even though he’s locked in for this season and 3 more, there’s calls for him to be fired.
Knoblauch needs to be fired without delay. He had the opportunity to remake his coaching staff this summer and the result is some of the worst Oilers hockey since before the McDavid draft. Send them all packing. The entire staff.

If the Oilers can’t turn things around within the next month or so, those calls will gain legitimacy - or this could be an unacceptable lost season in Edmonton.
