Toronto Maple Leafs News: David Kampf's Contract Termination & The Salary Cap Crunch
This year's Toronto Maple Leafs squad is arguably the deepest roster fans have seen in years. The organizational shift in philosophy, driven by significant offseason acquisitions, ultimately pushed several former members off the active roster. The most notable victim of this salary cap crunch and roster enhancement was veteran forward David Kampf.
Waiver Wire Fallout: Kampf Assigned to the Marlies
Early in the preseason, the Leafs strategically placed Kampf and his $2.4 million dollar salary on waivers. Kampf went unclaimed and was subsequently assigned to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL). This marked the first time Kampf had been on an AHL roster since the 2017-18 season, where he played 33 games for the Rockford IceHogs.
Potential Contract Termination: What’s Next for David Kampf?
Today, hockey insider Elliotte Friedman reported a significant development. According to sources he'd spoken with, there's a belief that when Kampf departed the Marlies, he did so under the impression that he planned on terminating his NHL contract.
If Kampf chooses to terminate his deal, he will forfeit his full salary for next season and any money remaining on his contract this season. Friedman noted:
“I don’t know exactly what was said or how it was communicated, but Kampf did leave players with the Marlies with the impression that he was going to terminate his contract.”
The Real Problem: Talent vs. The NHL Salary Cap System
The issue for Kampf has never been his ability to play at the NHL level. Instead, he has simply become a casualty of the rigid NHL salary cap system. During his tenure with the Maple Leafs, Kampf delivered everything asked of him from a defensive perspective but consistently saw his ice time decline, hitting a career-low of 12:24 per game last season.
In his debut year with the Leafs, Kampf impressively scored 11 goals and added 15 assists, often playing alongside more offensive-minded teammates. Critically, he handled some of the toughest defensive matchups, starting 82.6% of his shifts in the defensive zone. Throughout his career, Kampf has maintained a strong reputation as a positive player in the faceoff dot, a highly sought-after skill across the league.
His best performance came during the 2021-22 season when he played alongside Ilya Mikheyev and Pierre Engvall, proving that when paired with the right players, he can offer a significant impact at both ends of the ice. Since that peak, however, Kampf faced a rotation of linemates, including Noah Gregor, Pontus Holmberg, and significant time with Ryan Reaves. This clear lack of chemistry and complimentary players created undeniable issues for the forward.
Maximizing the Asset: A Market for a Defensive Specialist
More than anything, this feels like a situation where the team isn't sure how to maximize their own assets. Kampf clearly possesses legitimate NHL skill and the ability to shut down opponents, while also being capable of transitioning into an offensive role when given the right opportunity. However, it's my opinion that the forward is never going to fit into a Craig Berube system due to his inherent lack of overall physicality.
Earlier today, Eklund linked the forward to the Boston Bruins should he terminate his current contract, but in my opinion, if the opportunity truly presents itself, he could see interest from as many as 10 teams. Searching for an opportunity to prolong his NHL career, Kampf will likely take his time deciding on the perfect situation. His willingness to terminate his contract should demonstrate to potential suitors that he isn't burdened by a "country club" mentality; instead, he simply wants to play the game he loves at the level he knows he's capable of.
