Chris Tanev Injury: Leafs Defender Stretchered Off in Frightening Scene
In his very first game back from a concussion, Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev lay motionless on the ice at Xfinity Mobile Arena. An unexpected collision with Matvei Michkov left Tanev completely vulnerable and unable to protect himself.
While the play only resulted in a two-minute minor for interference for Michkov, the moment immediately became much bigger than a hockey game.

As he was stretchered off the ice, Tanev did muster a thumbs up—a positive sign, but one that did little to ease the concern in the building.
With the injury occurring midway through the 3rd period, there was no chance of a return to the game, and an in-game health update was unlikely. The Maple Leafs later confirmed Tanev was transported to a local area hospital for observations.
Coach Craig Berube Provides an Update
Following the game, Head Coach Craig Berube provided a cautious but hopeful update on Tanev's condition.
“He’s moving, and I think he'll be all right. But he’s getting some tests done right now. We’ll know more in a little while. We’ll know soon. He might be coming home with us.”

Berube says he’s moving around and might still fly back to Toronto with team. TBD.
Concerns Shift to Tanev's Long-Term Health
With the immediate scare addressed, the major concern now shifts to Tanev's long-term health. Tanev's history of concussions and head injuries was well-documented before he signed with the Maple Leafs.
Having just returned from a concussion, another potential head injury could mean a much longer and more complicated path to recovery. Tanev himself admitted on Friday that every concussion reacts differently, with some being far easier to overcome than others.
A Worrying Parallel to Jake Muzzin
For Leafs fans, this situation is worryingly familiar, drawing comparisons to the career of Jake Muzzin. After suffering multiple head injuries, Muzzin sustained a hit that resulted in a cervical spine injury, which ultimately ended his NHL career.
At the time, Muzzin prioritized his long-term, off-ice future over another quest for the Stanley Cup. With Tanev's own history of head injuries, similar questions about his long-term health will inevitably begin to surface.
A Sobering Reminder for a Respected Warrior
Tanev is regarded as one of the toughest players in the game and is widely respected across the league. That reputation for toughness is exactly what made the sight of him laying motionless so difficult to watch.
After seeing the veteran defender get up from near-inhuman punishment time and time again, last night was a sobering reminder that he is human, and that hockey careers don't last forever.
The Leafs have provided the following update:
The Maple Leafs announced today that defenceman Chris Tanev was evaluated overnight in Philadelphia for precautionary purposes, has been discharged this morning, and will return home to Toronto.
