Ben Danford: The Maple Leafs Prospect Silencing the Critics

When the Toronto Maple Leafs selected Ben Danford 31st overall in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, some felt the team went off the board. After trading down to the tail end of the first round, and with higher-profile names like Stian Solberg and EJ Emery still available, the pick caught many fans by surprise.

The Leafs' front office, however, saw something special. They were confident that the right-handed defender possessed all the necessary tools for a successful NHL career. Standing at 6'2" and already weighing over 200 lbs, Danford has the prototypical frame of an everyday NHL defenseman. While many questioned the pick, the team's management held firm in their high valuation of his overall potential.

Making a Strong Impression

That potential was on full display earlier this year. Danford had a very impressive showing during the Maple Leafs' training camp, even getting reps alongside veteran Oliver Ekman-Larsson. While no one expected the rookie to make the final roster, he made a compelling case for an eight-game showcase before the team ultimately made the decision to send him back to the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League.

A Dominant Return to the OHL

Sent back for a fourth OHL season, Danford arrived with clear developmental goals: continue to build out the physical side of his game, grow more defensively responsible, and add an offensive spark. Six games into his season, he has shown an unwavering commitment to developing every facet of his game.

During a recent game, the Generals’ Captain completely changed the momentum with a huge open-ice hit in the defensive zone before dropping the gloves to fire up his team. After serving his penalty, Danford found himself in an unfamiliar position on the power play, where he showcased his growing offensive polish by scoring a goal.

The Future of the Leafs' Blueline?

If Danford continues on his current development trajectory, it’s not a stretch to imagine him in the NHL next season. An opportunity to play and learn behind seasoned veterans like Chris Tanev and Brandon Carlo could be an incredible catalyst for his growth. The young defender already makes a strong first pass and has great instincts for clearing the puck from the defensive zone.

He is exactly the type of player the organization needs and could become the first truly homegrown defender to patrol the Leafs' blueline for the long term since Morgan Rielly.

The Culture Carrier Toronto Needs

I have high hopes for Danford and see him as the kind of player who could become a career Maple Leaf. He may never score 20 goals or rack up 50 assists, but he will be a player who excels at keeping the puck out of his own net, consistently defends his teammates, and gives a top-tier effort on every single shift. This is precisely the type of player the Maple Leafs need as they look to change the culture surrounding their team.
