Maple Leafs Prospect Matthew Hlacar Faces OHL Suspension
The Toronto Maple Leafs took a flyer on Matthew Hlacar in the 7th round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, making him one of the last players selected at 217th overall. After a stint at the Maple Leafs Development Camp, the imposing 6β3β, 205-pound forward was returned to the OHL's Kitchener Rangers.
When drafted, Hlacar's stat line of just 7 goals and 1 assist in 43 games raised some eyebrows. However, the Leafs were more interested in the physicality and edge he brought to the ice, evidenced by his 62 penalty minutes. Now, just four games into the new season, it appears that very edge has landed the Leafs prospect in hot water.
Hlacar Handed Six-Game Ban
The Ontario Hockey League has officially announced a six-game suspension for Hlacar following a controversial hit during a game against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

A Reckless Play That Needs to Be Removed
This is precisely the type of hit Hlacar must eliminate from his game if he ever hopes to reach the NHL. While the Maple Leafs covet his brand of physicality, this level of recklessness is a liability. Much like the debate around Morgan Riellyβs suspension for his hit on Ridly Greig, the desired message can often be sent more effectively by simply dropping the gloves.
Hlacar is the definition of a longshot prospect. To have any chance of a professional career, he must learn to channel his aggression and refine his game, proving he can be a physical force without crossing the line.
