To trade (Marty), or not to trade - THAT is the question... (NJ Devils)

So with the Olympics concluded and teams back to business, the next best thing is "NHL Trade Deadline Day". Almost as good as Christmas for me.

So here we see a very mediocre Devils team, two years removed from a Stanley Cup Finals appearance. Having had a bit of a makeover this offseason losing Captain Parise (Kovy, of course) and adding other pieces such as Clowe and Ryder, to name a few. The best (arguably Uncle Lou's best) acquisition was Cory Schneider - The heir apparent to the Devils goalie throne. Cory has made a statement to the Devils, the Canucks and the NHL - He is for real.

The question now is, What happens to the legend Martin Brodeur? Rumors have been heating up feverishly as there were many Scouts in attendance at last night's Devils vs. Blue Jackets tilt including the Blackhawks (who Marty spoke with when he was a free agent), Wild, Stars amongst others. And no, Marty would never be dealt within the division.

Marty, who has been relegated to a back-up on the team he has lead for his entire career, has been quite different this year when it comes to speaking with the media. Comments such as: "Whatever happens, I'm fine with it." have been common for him to say.

So, should Uncle Lou trade Martin Brodeur?? My short answer is; Only if the get an offer they can't refuse! PERIOD

The Devils have an ordinary team on the playoff bubble, but could be a player or two away from being a "threat". They have also shown, as have the Kings, that regular season means very little when the second season begins.

The Devils have, in my opinion, the best goalie tandem in the NHL even with a 41 year old Marty. Marty has not played poorly either.

Another question I have is, What is the market for Marty? A second rounder I would not take, as I believe Marty has more intangible value in Jersey with Schneider and most certainly as a playoff goalie (insurance - and he is a hell of an insurance). We all know how Uncle Lou loves his depth come playoff time.

A pending UFA, even a top liner, I would also pass.

So what gets dangled in front of the Devils come trade deadline day? I have much experience when speculating with Uncle Lou - I have no clue! Let the rumors begin.

One thing is for certain, Marty and Uncle Lou have a very open and trustworthy relationship. I can guarantee they both know where they stand and what actions will be taken. Marty will not be surprised by anything.

The one thing I keep thinking is... Will Marty blemish his legacy by skipping to another team for a playoff push or a season? He certainly doesn't need to.

Devils fans, Do you think Marty should be traded? I certainly do not think so! (unless we get an offer we can't refuse)

Only time wil tell.

Truly yours, The Devils Advocate
