So Much Isles Talk for July! (Islanders)

Leave it to Dominik of Lighthouse Hockey to have the best and most comprehensive explanation of Kevin Poulin’s filing for NHL arbitration after receiving his QO. http://www.lighthousehockey.com/2014/7/6/5876087/kevin-poulin-salary-arbitration-new-york-islanders-goalies

As Dominik explains, it’s more than likely Poulin’s AHL salary that is the major bone of contention as that is where he will spend almost the entirety of next season. *July 30th is Poulin's arbitration date.

Understand that Salary Arbitration is a tool given to players by the CBA. It is “part of the process… and should not be looked at as a major divide between management and player.

Although, this was an interesting point:

Isles Nation …@NYIslesNation Jul 7 Last season, Chad Johnson played 1 less game than Kevin Poulin and gave up 36 less goals.

Sean McQuillan …@SQuillan 1h @Harry4naris Per the CBA, contracts cannot be ripped up and re-negotiated, even if both JT and #isles want to.

Adding to the staff:

Arthur Staple …@StapeNewsday 9h #Isles have added former NHLer Marty Reasoner to player development staff. Will be working mostly with prospects in BPT.

Rob Gatt …@r_gatt 9h Maybe #Isles will also hire Jon Sim to help Reasoner. #sarcasm But seriously, Reasoner can be a valuable teacher for prospects.

Keith …@KeithLHHockey 9h If Marty Reasoner teaches the prospects how to take faceoffs, that'll be great. You can’t score if you don’t’ have the puck.

Mini Camp Opens:

It’s that time of year again when the Islander prospects hit the ice and the gym and meet the coaches. More of an exercise of ‘let’s get acquainted’ than ‘let’s see what you really got.’ It’s a welcome event for Isles fans yearning for hockey. It’s also a great time for the local media to meet and get to know the young men who could become stars in the NHL. It will give them great stories to tell years from now.

From the Isles own Cory Wright, here are some interesting facts:

47 – Total Skaters 1 – Absent Skater (Sam Herr) to arrive on Thursday 2 – Sessions, one on-ice and one off-ice 4 – First-round Picks Participating: Griffin Reinhart, Ryan Pulock, Michael Dal Colle and Joshua Ho-Sang 6 – Local players from Long Island: Tommaso Bucci, John Schiavo, Chris Makowski, Jimmy Mazza, Mike Marnell and Anthony Pupplo. 27 – Undrafted Players 6746 – Miles (roughly) from Long Island to Japan. Japanese prospect Yuri Terao travelled the furthest of any invitee to attend camp.

Jack Capuano: Any time you can have a local player come to one of these camps, it’s exciting... They get to go through an experience they will never forget. They learn what it’s going to take for them to get to the next level and it’s great that the organization does things like that."

Looking at the roster, you can see that this isn’t the first rodeo for some of the players. I remember Nino wasn’t exactly thrilled to be at his third rookie camp, but Scott Mayfield looks at it quite differently and told Cory Wright what he hopes to accomplish.

Scott Mayfield: "This camp I want to be more of a leader considering it’s my fourth year, but at the same time I can learn something new every day... My goal is to play here on the Island, I know I got the chance last year, but I want to be a full-time player this year."

Ho-Sang: "Just to be out there… the whole atmosphere… It’s really exciting, I’m like a kid in a candy store. The fact that I get to wear this logo and the equipment… it’s a blessing."
Daniel Friedman …@DFriedmanOnNYI 9h Man, this Ho-Sang kid can fly. Almost looks like someone's hitting the speed burst button. #Isles

Maybe Grabner will have some competition in the speed department.

Jeff Capellini …@GreenLanternJet 8h If this hockey thing doesn't work out, Josh Ho-Sang should run for office. Dude's the mayor of Uniondale already. #Isles

Josh Lentin …@jlentin39 7m I haven't even seen the kid play yet and he's not even on main roster but @66jhosang is already my second favorite player on the #isles

Arthur Staple …@StapeNewsday 1h Among #Isles D prospects, some new heights/weights from today's weigh-ins: Czuczman up to 209 from 204, Mayfield now 6-5/218 (was 6-4/210).

IslesBlog …@IslesBlog 1h Griffin Reinhart jumped from 202lbs to 217 this year? Someone wants to play in the NHL.... #Isles

This group should make Thursday’s charity scrimmage a fun and interesting one. And seriously, what’s better than hockey in July? (Say it… go ahead… you know you want to… Hockey in June.)

Meet & Greets: The team store has announced three player signings this month. Brock Nelson on Monday 7/14, Thomas Hickey on 7/21 and Casey Cizikas on 7/28. Signings are from 6 - 7:30 pm, so get there early to be guaranteed an autograph. And if you go on Monday the 14th, get there by 5:30 pm and get $1 hot dogs and sodas. That in itself is amazing since they were $6 each at the draft party. Thank you SMG.
