The New Jersey Devils have 14 forwards signed to one-way contracts, would still like to retain Ryan Carter, and have openly said both Reid Boucher and Stefan Matteau will get cracks at making the team.
Only 12 forwards dress per night, so obviously things don't add up in New Jersey.
When the team signed Martin Havlat and Mike Cammalleri in free agency, it became a matter of when but not if a body or two are moved out.
With training camp set to open next week and the regular season just around the corner, the Devils are looking to move those bodies in effort to get their roster in place and ready for the season.
Via Pierre LeBrun on ESPN: "We'll just wait and see, we certainly have some extra forwards," Devils GM Lou Lamoriello told ESPN.com on Thursday. "We've made the decision to go with the young defensemen but we've got a couple of extra forwards. We'll just listen, there's nothing we have to do, we're in a good position cap-wise, we'll just wait and see what transpires."
Bruce Garrioch recently reported that Damien Brunner's name is out there and the Senators, a team looking to add a top-9 forward, might have interest, so he's someone to watch for. I could also see Michael Ryder's name thrown into the mix of potential trade candidates.
It'll be interesting to see what Lou Lamoriello elects to do here, because sooner or later someone has to be moved.
