There have been some interesting developments from the past few days for the online hockey community. Two new hockey sites devoted to hockey statistics have popped up.
One of the new sites is Progressive Hockey. Progressive Hockey has been put together by Link text Matthew Pfeffer Here is his information from his website
Matt Pfeffer is the Director of Hockey Analytics for the Ottawa 67's and lead analyst and developer for PowerScout Hockey. He has written for The Hockey News, Hockey Prospectus, TheScout.ca and has worked for hockey teams and organizations across North America. He currently resides in Ottawa. The other site that debuted was war-on-ice.com . This wonderful site is actually put together from two people that reside in Pittsburgh. @acthomasca is a statistics professor at Carnegie Mellon University. Sam Ventura ( @stat_sam ) is a PhD candidate in statistics and also has ties to Carnegie Mellon University.
Both sites are in their beta stages but they each bring some unique qualities. For example Progressive Hockey has the home plate save percentage stat that I wrote about yesterday readily available while war-on-ice.com has data that goes back to 2002 (previously 2007 was furthest back things went). It is funny to look back and see just how god awful the 2003-04 Penguins were.
Both sites will continue to make things more user friendly as time moves on. The biggest thing to take away from this is that it opens up a lot more opportunity to further the discussion. I'll show you a quick example of one of the charting tools that is available at war-on-ice.com.
In the chart below I have created a gif that highlights the relative shot rate for when Sidney Crosby is on the ice for the Penguins versus when he is off the ice. Red is good, that means the shots are heading at the oppositions net, blue is bad, the puck is heading towards the Penguins net.
Nothing ground breaking here, Sidney Crosby is great. However, it is always nice to see it presented in different ways.
The more time I get to play around with both of these sites, the more I'll be able to provide different and fresh analysis.
