The Buffalo Sabres were in an understandablly ornery mood after St. Louis clowned them in the second period on Tuesday night. With the Blues leading 3-0 on a Jori Lehtera hat trick, Ian Cole took a douchey shot at Sabres center/winger Tyler Ennis.
For no reason at all, the bigger, stronger Cole (6'1 220 lbs.) dropped Ennis. Then all hell broke loose. All five Sabres on the ice attacked the Blues, who were not expecting such an aggressive reaction. Sabres fans have to love the all-for-one-one-for-all response of all of their players on the ice during the melee. Rookie Nikita Zadorov (6'5" 235 lbs.) pumped a dozen upper cuts into Cole's facial region, while Zemgus Girgensons, Tyler Myers, and Matt Moulson fought their way into the fray.
Watch as bigger, St. Louis forward Alex Steen (6'0 215 lbs.) shows how tough he is by mauling the smaller, less physical Tyler Ennis (5'8 165 lbs.) of the Sabres.
Zadorov: Thought it was a little bit dirty, that's why I stood up for my teammate. But it's done. Onto the next game.. #BUFvsSTL

Connor McDavid's head coach Kris Knoblauch on the unfortunate injury to the best prospect in the world:
"He’s competitive and that happens in hockey, but certainly as a team we want him on the ice and we want him scoring goals not in the penalty box,… said Knoblauch of #97 fighting. “But can’t hold him back and take the bite out of him.
“He’s certainly competitive and gets angry sometimes, but as a team we’re certainly better with him.…

The Erie Otters have confirmed that their star center Connor McDavid is out indefinitely.
I'll bet that Otters GM/Owner Sherry Bassin will be working his phone and email looking for a trade to replace McDavid's offensive punch. Good luck trying to replace a 3.5 point per game player.
Bassin has two hockey mitts full of premium draft choices to use to make a trade with Sudbury for Buffalo Sabres forward prospect Nick Baptiste who can deliver 40+ goals with the flick of his wrists.
Baptiste has played only seven games this season after missing the first 11 games with an injury. Despite that, he has scored 4 goals and 4 assists.
Baptiste scored 45 goals and added 44 assists (+20) in 65 games last season.

Hand specialist in Toronto?
That doesn't sound too good a prognosis for Connor McDavid's hand/wrist. I know of several excellent orthopaedic specialists in Erie, PA. That The McDavids are bringing Connor to Toronto to be seen by a specialist there adds another layer of concern to this injury.
Sportsnet's John Shannon reports that McDavid is out indefinitely.
McDavid is out indefinitely. Believe to have hit hand, during fight,on top of boards. Will see a Hand Specialist in Toronto. More tomorrow.

Connor McDavid will have his hand/wrist x-rayed shortly at a local hospital. Hamot Hopistal and St. Vincent's Hospital are both blocks away from the Erie Insurance Arena.
More to come..
Being told @cmcdavid97 has been taken to a hospital for x-rays #erie

Part of the role of being the big man on campus is having to defend oneself against goons and knuckleheads who take liberties such as finishing checks hard, hitting from behind and general tomfoolery and hijinx.
Comes news tonight that Connor McDavid dropped the gloves for the second time this season and in so doing, he has injured his hand. Mississauga's Bryson Cianfrone and McDavid slugged it out until linesmen broke up the fight.
Harmless, right?
Hold on a minute.
His Gordie Howe Hat Trick was good while it lasted, however, he may have seriously injured his hand in the process. The kid's hands should be insured by Lloyd's of London and should be registered with the Erie County Pennsylvania Sheriffs office as lethal weapons.
McDavid cannot score, dazzle and create magic if his hand is in a cast.
McDavid's right hand has been injured in his second fight of the season. Its hard to determine whether McDavid's right hand was injured by punching Cianfrone's melon or by accidentally smashing it on the glass.
Why is the consensus first overall pick in the 215 NHL Draft bothering to drop the gloves, you may ask?
Because, he's a complete hockey player and will not tolerate getting knocked around by opponents. He told me after the Erie-Niagara game in Buffalo last week "I'm not just going to let people push me around out there (on the ice). I have to stick up for myself".
After the fight, McDavid retreated immediately to the Erie room along with the team trainer. Neither returned to the Otters' bench.
The Otters lead 4-0 after 20 minutes of play but the only thing that matters right now is McDavid's hand.
McDavid scored a goal and added an assist in the first period of play. He now has scored 16 goal sand 35 assists in just 18 games played this season.
The cities of Erie, PA and Buffalo, NY are holding their collective breath right now hoping that McDavid's mitt will allow him to play on.
BREAKING NEWS...@cmcdavid97 to the dressing room with the trainer, looked like his right hand - @ErieOtters fans hold your breath #erie

To add insult to injury, McDavid was assessed a game misconduct for removing Cianfrone's bucket during their scrap.

I'll work on getting an injury update and will pass it along to you.

Suddenly, the stock of McDavid's teammate Dylan Strome has increased.
Strome is the 1B center on the Otters. He compliments McDavid's 1A center status perfectly.
With his goal and assist tonight, Strome now has 13G, 28A in 18 games. He's +22. He's #1 center on any other junior club
— SabresBuzz (@SabresBuzz) November 12, 2014
In the most resent ISS Hockey Prospects ranking which was published last week, Strome had jumped up from #9 in October to #5 in the overall among NHL eligible prospects, behind McDavid, Eichel, Hanifin and Barzal.
