We are here, full on silly season and this year it seems like there is way more talk going on with real names than in a long time. Last year it was all about Iginla, two years too late mind you but that was it- this year names are everywhere, Kesler, Edler, Spezzaa, All of the Sabres, Half the Oilers, Some of the Stars, and all three Carolina goalies. At least if everything on Twitter is to be believed we should have a fun few days.
As it relates to the Jets we have to consider not so much the source, or 'noise' around the team (there isn't any) just the logical likelihood of who could be traded. If Chevy decides to do something he could add but likely subtract from his roster in the hopes of using the return later. It's selling now for futures later as is there really a hockey deal for the team to be made at this juncture as they chase the 8th spot in the West?
The lis of names below are some likely candidates who could be on the block form the Jets.
Setoguchi
If you want a 'Scoring Winger' take a look at Devon Setoguchi. He has scored in the past, and he has spent time on the wing. What you get in Gooch is a guy who is a passenger but one who is well-behaved and will probably give you some value at some point. If you have a strong engine and a capable driver Gooch is your guy riding shotgun. He won't be that accurate so you that's why you need the good engine and driver.
Stuart
Need some 'Sandpaper and Grit' Mark Stuart is your man. Blocks shots fearlessly, goes into the dirty areas of the ice and will never back down from a skirmish. Adored by his teammates, Stu brings all the intangibles any coach or GM from 1982 would want. There's a reason he blocks so many shots and has to go into those 'dirty areas' as he rarely has the puck but hey no one questions his heart.
Postma & Redmond
Do you have a 'Puck Moving D-man' on the shopping list? Perhaps you'll have interest in Paul Postma or Zach Redmond. While neither are elite defensemen they offer some upside and may fit into that 'bargain' category should you have the right situation. Effective injury replacement players both can, and will move the puck if there is an open forward or gaping hole from a bad shift. Neither will kill you defensively unless you expect a hidden Chara lying within either of them.
Jokinen
Always hot at the deadline is the 'Play-Making Centre' and the Jets don't have one but they do have Jokinen. He's close enough as after he left Florida where he put up 90 point seasons every GM named Sutter thought he would be the answer for Iginla. All credit to Jokinen he found success despite being used against his strengths. He's no the fastest, he's not the best passer, nor does he battle in deep but he's a good at something. What that is has not been seen in Winnipeg but he could be a good depth guy, just like he is on the Jets.
Byfuglien
A 'Power-Play Quarterback' is a necessity for any playoff run and Dustin Byfuglien is your guy. not only can he play the QB on a power play he also will do duty as a 3rd line right wing. Big Buff is an exceptional combination of size and skill rarely seen in the sport and he comes with a very affordable contract for two more seasons. He'll cost a lot if you want him but he's like getting 2 players in 1. When you ask him to 'clear the crease' expect it with his slap shot at the opposition not in front of his own goalie.
It's not a lot but you could make five skaters and a sub out of it in dire straits. The point being here is that the Jets have a lot to offer but as it's been said time and time again the opportunity is the off-season not the deadline. That could always change but I'm not sure Chevy has the chops yet to make that deal under this pressure with a Byfuglien or Kane. I'm not sure he can get true value back either and that's one more reason to be patient and see what this team does down the stretch.
