Things are getting bad for New Jersey, and they're getting bad in a hurry.
The Devils have won just 2 of their last 11 games, and have looked terrible while doing so.
While they made it close in Dallas, the reality is the Stars controlled the game for a good portion of it; as has been the case all too often of late.
In the last four games the Devils have one win. It was a 2-1 win where they were dominated by the Hurricanes, and they were outplayed, at times significantly, during each of their three losses.
Over the last four contests the Devils have been out-attempted 299-192 (39CF%) in all situations. For a team that generally does well in possession that's pretty embarrassing, especially considering they played two of the worst teams in the East (Carolina, Philadelphia) and a struggling Stars team in that span.
They're struggling mightily to score, and if Cory Schneider and/or Keith Kinkaid allow more than a goal or two chances are they're not going to win.
The Devils have won consecutive games once since winning the first three games of the year. That was back at the end of October.
They're already five points out and have played 2-3 games more than the playoff teams ahead of them, so they'll be tough to catch even with so much time remaining.
Of all the stats I could throw at you I think this one summarizes their season best:
Buffalo Sabres - 12 wins in 30 games. New Jersey Devils - 11 wins in 31 games.
When a team with a GM who is trying to tank has more wins than you through almost 40% of the season, it's probably safe to say you're not a legitimate playoff contender.
If things don't change soon, and I'm not convinced they will, then the Devils are going to miss the playoffs for the third time in a row and fourth time in five years.
