Rumors are really ramping up today that Brodeur could be accepting a gig soon to be the backup for Carey Price in Montreal. We have been discussing this for a while now, but the question now is apparently changing. For the first time people around Marty are saying that he might be willing to accept a backup position as long as that position is in a place that interests him.
To Marty Brodeur there is no more interesting spot than Montreal. Brodeur grew up a Habs fan and his father was a legendary Canadiens photographer. If the Habs are interested this will get done.
Is it a good idea?
I believe this is a fantastic idea in the locker room. Brodeur is a no nonsense leader and having talked to him over the years I can honestly say that few players have his knowledge of the game. There are plenty of young players in Montreal who will benefit greatly from having him around. Brodeur brings a big footprint with him and that could require some definitive coaching. Remember for years in NJ when Marty wanted to start he made the call. With Gerard Gallant gone to Florida I believe Brodeur can help out in many ways.
On the ice I do believe Brodeur still has something left to give. He would have been a tremendous option last year when Price went down. I will say this though...the Canadiens defensive schemes are vastly different from the Devils. Brodeur had a team built around his strengths and weaknesses in NJ. That will not be the case in Montreal.
How would this affect Carey Price?
This is a huge question to ask. Up until last year I wouldn't have touched bringing a legend like Brodeur into that room, however over the last year it really appeared as I Price came into his own when it comes to his head. Maybe it was the Olympics, but Carey Price now believes in his game to the point where I believe he can handle all that comes with Brodeur as your backup.
I see this as a win/win. And the more people I talk to the more I believe it could happen.
