Follow Colin on Twitter! Follow @ColinDJD The Calgary Flames fell to the Montreal Canadiens last night after netminder Carey Price proved to be ultimately too strong in the shootout at the Saddledome.
It’s a particularly tough loss after goaltending is what has saved them in many games so far this year but Hiller couldn’t best Price. Last night’s game was a different story though as Hiller only faced 18 shots and the Flames out shot the Canadiens by a landslide with 37 shots against a red hot Carey Price.
That type of offensive effort is exactly what the Flames need. Even though they arguably faced the best goalie in the league, they’ll need to convert more than 1 goal out of 37 shots if the hope to win more games.
And in terms of areas of improvements, that’s not the only place the Flames didn’t convert. On the 2 man advantage every attempt was thwarted by the Canadiens defense. They can’t miss opportunities like that, scoring on the 2 man advantage would have changed the pace of the game for the Flames and could have resulted in a win. Luckily for Calgary, however, Hiller was just as brilliant as Price on the power play kill and throughout overtime play.
Joe Colborne and Matt Stajan left the game with injuries last night and no word out yet on the extent of their injuries. With Colborne, it seems to be a wrist/arm injury but the Flames will be hoping for his healthy and prompt return because the centerman has contributed to 8 assists this season, more than any other Flame.
The Flames can’t be too disappointed with the loss, after all Montreal is first in the Eastern Conference and have won 8 of 10 games this season. Like I said the 37 shots on net was a surprisingly impressive feat from a usually blah offensive team. Calgary can definitely build off this loss.
Next the Flames have one more home game against Nashville before heading on a 5 game road trip. Where they will face the Canadiens again on Sunday. Aside from that game, their schedule is relatively lax and I’d like to see the Flames return to the Saddledome with at least 4 wins.
