The game of hockey has a lot of moving parts. It also has a lot of random chance. Most times when we are talking about random chance we are talking about curious bounces that lead to goals.
It can also mean unfortunate situations where it can lead to injury. We saw it with the fluky Brooks Orpik shot that broke Crosby's jaw and now we see it with Pascal Dupuis getting hit square in the upper back/neck by a Kris Letang shot.
Dupuis immediately called the medical staff over mid-play. You could also see him actively moving his fingers as if it was an attempt to make sure they were still responding. This leads me to believe we are talking about a potential vertebrae injury.
Here was the play
The NHL can't protect its players from every scenario, the game is littered with inherent danger every shift, but calling a penalty on that cross check would probably be a nice start.
Here is to hoping this injury is not as bad as it looks.
