All three Devils players who were waived by the team on Monday have cleared.
Steve Bernier and Cam Janssen unsurprisingly weren't picked up and will be assigned to Albany. Bernier carries a one-way contract, so he'll make the same salary ($600K) as he would have if he were playing in New Jersey.
I think it was a bit of a surprise that Pete Harrold cleared. The team is high on Damon Severson and he practiced on the top pairing today so it seems like a safe bet he'll start the year in New Jersey. If that's the case, Harrold is probably heading to Albany as well. I'd assume Harrold would be the first guy recalled in the event of an injury or someone struggling.
Jordin Tootoo was sheltered with plenty of offensive zone starts in the preseason, but he fared well in possession and was effective on the forecheck so the Devils will sign and keep him to start the season.
Tom Gulitti is reporting the Devils would also like to sign Scott Gomez after a respectable preseason, but that there's no room on the roster right now, so he'll be asked to stick around for a bit without a contract.
If/when Gomez is signed, I think the writing is on the wall that either Stephen Gionta or Jacob Josefson are on the way out. Josefson was better in the preseason and is younger with more potential, but something tells me it'll probably be him on the move.
New Jersey's 23-man roster is almost set for now, but it could change quite a bit over the next couple weeks.
