The New Jersey Devils opened up training camp today, and there's quite a bit of news to get to.
First and foremost, the team announced they've signed 23-year-old defenseman Eric Gelinas to a contract extension.
Gelinas will earn $900,000 on a one-year deal according to TVA Sports' Renaud Lavoie.
à‰ric Gelinas contract with the Devils. 1 year / $900 000
— Renaud Lavoie (@renlavoietva) September 15, 2014The team also announced that veteran defenseman Mike Komisarek would be in camp on a tryout basis. Komisarek played in 32 games with the Hurricanes last year and had four points while owning a 48CF% and a -3.4 Corsi relative to his team when he wasn't on the ice.
Like with Tomas Kaberle, Ruslan Fedotenko, Jordin Tootoo, Scott Gomez and Renat Mamashev, Komisarek is a long shot to make the team entering camp.
That said, camp competition is never a bad thing, and I think that's something the Devils are relying on to put forward the most competitive roster possible.
