Game notes:
- After forcing himself onto the team with an excellent preseason, Damon Severson will play on the top pairing in his first NHL game. He'll have some leash, but he's on a two-way deal so he'll need to continue to impress if he wants to stay with the big club.
- Speaking of Severson, he and Andy Greene will likely draw the assignment of Claude Giroux's line tonight. They weren't at their best in Boston, so you can bet they'll be looking to rebound and come out flying at home tonight. The Devils need to be ready.
- Pete DeBoer plans on using a three-headed monster down the middle with Travis Zajac, Patrik Elias and Adam Henrique each anchoring their own line. One of those lines is going to draw easier matchups, so they'll need to take advantage of that.
- Cory Schneider will be making his first start of the post-Brodeur era in a building he's never played in before. Again, the Flyers will have plenty of energy at home tonight and look to start off quickly, so he needs to be on his game.
- Generally goaltenders aren't as good in the 2nd half of a back-to-back as they are during the 1st game, so the Devils need to test that theory and put pucks on Mason early and often.
- Jordin Tootoo likes to play fast and finish his checks, but he needs to make sure he doesn't take a bad penalty trying to make an immediate impact. Spoon feeding Giroux and co. power plays is never a good idea.
