The Boston Bruins have announced that they have signed Simon Gagne to a one-year deal worth around 650,000. Great move. Simon is a very versatile player and still has a ton of speed. He can play the point on the power play, kill penalties, and play on any line from 1 to 4. He also fills in the role which Jerome Iginla and Mark Recchi played for this team in the past. The wily old veteran with experience who can help the young players along. Plus, like Rex, Gagne has won a Stanley Cup.
Introducing the "Cranky Old Hockey Writers Show Podcast."
Is with great enthusiasm that I am proud to announce a new weekly podcast coming to Hockeybuzz.com as part of our tenth season celebration. I've been so fortunate to be doing this job over the last nine seasons and have met and become friends with some great legendary hockey writers. And now I get to do a show with my two all-time favorites, Kevin Allen of USA Today Sports and Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail.
The show is simple and was developed around many a late night media meal where I was fortunate enough to hear and talk to these great writers. These guys pre-date Twitter and they pre-date the Internet itself. The experience they have and their unique view on the game is what will be on display in these shows. Breaking news in the age of Twitter has become a commodity, but the opinion of those with the most knowledge and history with a subject will forever live on in journalism.
But going beyond all that, mostly these guys just have awesome stories to tell. My job is to get the puck to them and let them go. We will also be adding guests to the show. Other writers who've been around long enough to have a strong opinion, and put the week's hockey news into proper context.
In the first episode today, we will discuss NHL rivalries.
* What are the best rivalries in the NHL? * Which rivalries are still going strong, which rivalries are fading away, and which rivalries are about to emerge? * How are rivalries formed and how do rivalries affect what a General Manager does in building his team?
