The Flames job doesn’t get any easier tonight taking on the Blackhawks in Chicago.
Even though the Blackhawks are a repeatedly dominate team in the NHL, the Flames actually won 2 of their previous 3 meetings last season. The Blackhawks are however undefeated so far this season and will look to continue that streak tonight.
I expect Chicago to come on strong. They will try to capitalize on their speed off the rush and shutting them down won’t be easier. Giordano and Brodie will need to continue their strong showing. Both of whom had a solid game in Nashville. They will need to shut down Kane who had 5 points in their last 3 meetings last year. The key to winning is remaining strong on defense because defensively they tend to collapse.
The biggest test tonight will come for Hiller. Hartley has alternated goalies so far this season and its Hiller's turn tonight tp try and prove his worth. So far he’s definitely been given the more challenging opponents but a strong showing against a worthy team like Chicago will help his campaign for a starting goalie position.
Offensively I’m still waiting to see Johnny Hockey showcase his ability. This is a kid who had a point in every game throughout college. If he can get comfortable, Gaudreau could unload for Calgary offensively. Hopefully the flood gates will open once he gets the all-important first goal. It won’t be easy for Gaudreau to stand out against some of the top defensemen like Keith and Seabrook, however he's learning the game at this level and I wouldn't be surprised if it took him another few games to settle in, completely.
Statistically, on every level the Blackhawks are better than the Flames; they average 4 goals a game over Calgary’s 2.50, they only allow 2 goals compared to 3, and they average 10.03 more shots per game than the Flames. But Chicago can’t underestimate Calgary as they proved last season they can play with the big dogs and should certainly put up a fight tonight.
