Head coach Todd Richards made history when it was announced that he had signed a two-year extension with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Believe it or not, Richards is the first coach in the history of the franchise to be extended by the team twice.
Richards has steadily improved since his first year when the Blue Jackets had a points percentage of .463 during 41 games he coached under the interim tag.
In the lockout shortened season his Jackets had a 24-17-7 record (.573PTS%) just missing out on the playoffs, and we all know the story this year, as he coached Columbus to the 2nd playoff berth in team history.
Since taking over as the coach of the Blue Jackets, their possession numbers (fenwick close%) have improved from 26th, to 24th, to 12th in the NHL respectively.
The Jackets may have went out in the 1st round, but they were no easy task for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and with many of their young players improving and high-end prospects Kerby Rychel, Alexander Wennberg and co. knocking on the NHL doorstep, the future looks bright in Columbus.
Richards deserved the two-year extension he received, and chances are his Blue Jackets will make some noise before that contract expires.
