The Islanders gave us all an early present under the tree last night by playing some of their best hockey all season, producing a 3-0 win against the Red Wings in Detroit. The Islanders go balanced scoring from Okposo, Grabner and Cizikas and were able to take control of this game early.
When The Red Wings did push back Evgeni Nabokov was able to hold the fort together and the Islanders came away with a much needed win going into the Christmas break. Detroit is a team right now reeling with injuries but and the Islanders were able to grab control of the game with a strong forecheck and good work in their own zone.
The line of Nielsen, Grabner and Bailey are showing signs of life and for the Islanders to have any chance to dig themselves out of this hole they must continue to score and take some of the pressure off the top line. What the Islanders need to do now is build off this win and get some momentum going by beating the Devils on Saturday. If the season has any chance of being saved they have to string some wins together. With the mediocre play of the division there is a chance to pick up some points. The Islanders however will need to play like they did last night. They have to win the battles in the corners and create chances off the forecheck.
