24/7: Road to the Winter Classic Episode 1 (nhl)

In case you've been living under a rock, the 2014 NHL Winter Classic between the Red Wings and the Maple Leafs is just around the corner and the latest edition of HBO's 24/7: Road to the Winter Classic debuted last night. If you missed it, you can watch it here:

My favorite parts were when Joffrey Lupul called someone a piece of shit after a little skirmish (there are so many instances in which I see players jawing at each other and wonder what they're saying….now I know.), when Phil Kessel beat James van Riemsdyk in a bubble hockey game during a team Christmas party (not sure I've ever seen him express such emotion…or even smile) and when Daniel Alfredsson told his son not to pick his nose (I want to know how he managed to do that through the cage on his helmet.) Fun times, right?! I was more impressed with the one-on-one interviews, especially from Randy Carlyle and Mike Babcock…just very honest and straight forward.

I was disappointed they only covered through Wednesday. I remember last time the shows were current through the day before it aired and now ten days and five games each seems like a lot of ground to cover to catch up in 60 minutes. Also, I can't believe they showed Stephen Weiss's homecoming to Florida and not Alfredsson's to Ottawa! The two just don't compare and it would have provided for a great moment and tied in nicely with their package of his family. Big missed opportunity, in my opinion.

So, while I appreciate being a fly on the wall in the locker room and thought the storytelling and editing were superb, I'm hoping for much more in the next episode.

What did you guys think?
