Zach Werenski wins NHL Rookie of the Month for November (Blue Jackets)

The NHL has one of the best rookie classes it’s seen in recent memory, with players like Auston Matthews and Patrik Laine among a host of others. Most of the top rookies are forwards but one defencemen has made his mark, and Zach Werenski has been rewarded for his strong month of November, winning the Rookie of the Month award.

Werenski finished November with three goals and seven assists in 14 games. His 10 points were tied for third among rookies in the month, and tied for fifth among all NHL defencemen. He was a big part of why the Jackets were so successful this past month going 9-3-2.

On the season Werenski has 16 points in 21 games, placing him in a tie for fourth among rookies and leading defencemen. Among all NHL defenders he ranks sixth, and is among names like Victor Hedman and P.K. Subban,

Werenski has been so more than just a point producer this season. He has stepped in onto the top pair alongside Seth Jones and has such an impact on the team. He currently leads the Jackets blue line with a 52.95% Corsi at 5 on 5, pointing to a strong two-way game. It’s not even like he is being carried by Jones either, when Jones was hurt Werenski did not suffer and more than held his own. Werenski has played over 100 minutes with five players this season and each one has seen a significant boost when alongside the rookie.

With the way Zach Werenski has played this season it would not be shocking to see him join Steve Mason as a two time Rookie of the Month award winner.
