With the Buffalo Sabres reportedly close to reaching an agreement with Dan Bylsma, and the Detroit Red Wings expected to hire Jeff Blashill, the New Jersey Devils are the only NHL team without a coach lined up.
There is no shortage of good candidates, though.
Whether the Devils are looking for a veteran coach, a new coach with fresh ideas or anything in between there are plenty of options available.
Paul MacLean was a name mentioned as a possibility months ago. Ray Shero is very familiar with John Hynes and has already been granted permission to speak to him. Guy Boucher, who is looking to get back behind an NHL bench, is another name that was recently linked to the Devils.
There are others, too, including in-house options Scott Stevens and Adam Oates, though the latter seems likely to head elsewhere.
At this point I think Hynes is the favorite - it's worth noting New Jersey would likely have to give Pittsburgh compensation if they hire him - but it truly is anyone's guess.
This will be Shero's first big decision since taking over as GM of the Devils, and his choice will have a big impact on the team going forward.
Shero needs to ensure he makes the right one.
