A couple weeks ago Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman tossed out the idea that the Calgary Flames may be considering changes in goal.
That appears to be the case as the Flames have recently been rumored as a possible destination for Ottawa's Robin Lehner and now New York's Cam Talbot.
Cam Talbot is a hot commodity. Edmtn, Cgy, SJ, Dallas + Florida have expressed interest. Multiple trade offers. First 3 most likely targets.
— Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) June 18, 2015There are a couple notable tidbits in that tweet from Darren Dreger.
First and foremost the Flames are listed as a possible destination. That's two goaltenders they've been linked to in as many days and these are reputable sources dishing out the information.
The Flames aren't mentioned as a potential landing spot for multiple goaltenders unless they are calling around so we know they are considering changes in goal.
The other noteworthy tidbit is that Dreger noted the first three teams listed are the more likely destinations for Talbot.
One of those teams is not like the other. With Antti Niemi hitting the open market the San Jose Sharks need a goaltender. The Edmonton Oilers are in desperate need of a goaltender. The Flames, on the other hand, already have two goaltenders signed to one-way contracts and have a couple high-end goaltending prospects on the way.
I've mentioned before that Jon Gilles is not far away from being ready for NHL duty. Jonas Hiller is at worst an average starting goaltender and is signed for next season. That led me to believe the Flames would ride Hiller for another season and re-evaluate their situation next summer.
It appears GM Brad Treliving has other plans, though.
We're all familiar with the saying "where there's smoke, there's fire" and that certainly looks to be the case.
