What a mess.
That's the best way I can describe New Jersey's 6-1 loss to the New York Rangers on Saturday night.
While I don't think the Devils played as poorly as the score would indicate, they certainly were not at their best.
Cory Schneider, who has been the best player on the team this season by a country mile, allowed three goals on six shots, and it didn't get much better when Keith Kinkaid took over.
Kinkaid made some big stops early and held the Devils in it for a while, but he also allowed three goals in the blowout loss.
At the other side of the rink, Henrik Lundqvist was stopping the puck as if it were a beachball. He made some incredible saves, and made them look easy in the process.
The Devils scored just one goal on Henrik Lundqvist, but they scored a pair in their own net. That puts in perspective how the game went. Obviously it wasn't intentional, it was just a bad night in a season that's been full of them.
Once again, though, there were some positives courtesy of the kids. Stefan Matteau had two shots on goal, and five hits in over 15 minutes of ice, while Jacob Josefson scored the team's lone goal, and Reid Boucher recorded four shots in just over 11 minutes.
Hopefully they can continue to produce moving forward, because beyond those three there isn't a lot in the way of NHL-ready talent up front.
