The decision to place Sam Gagner on waivers to create cap space for Mark Streit's reactivation and to keep Shayne Gostisbehere around was surprising.

Flyers GM Ron Hextall could have sent Scott Laughton directly to the Phantoms without waivers. He could have placed Brandon Manning, R.J. Umberger or even Nick Schultz, who has struggled all season, on waivers.

Gagner's $3.2 million cap hit has an asterisk. The most the Flyers can use in cap clear is $950,000.

Hextall admitted none of his options were good.

“We didn’t have a great option. We had a couple different options, weighed them out and talked them through. We felt [this] was the best one at this time.…

And he has 8 d-men now. I suspect that is insurance on Michael Del Zotto's left wrist injury. I don't think he plays tomorrow against the Sharks and he admitted that if he rushes back and gets hurt worse, he'll miss significant time.

“It’s December,… Del Zotto said. “It’s not something I want to come back and rush into it and then deal with it for a month or so. I want to take it a step at a time and be 100 percent.…

So here's a poll question: who would you have waived?
