The Washington Capitals played their hearts out tonight and came away with a huge win at Madison Square Garden after Joel Ward tucked in a shot underneath Henrik Lundqvist's pads for a 2-1 lead with one second left in regulation.
Ward took a wonderful pass from Alex Ovechkin who fed the puck from behind the net.
At the end of the game, there was a scuffle that resulted in both teams face-washing each other and wish each other well until Game Two.
Braden Holtby was sensational tonight, stopping 31 shots on a relentless Rangers attack. The Caps defense was steady most of the night, keeping the Rangers away from Holtby, the Caps goaltender stood tall when he had to.
Henrik Lundqvist was equally impressive, stopping 27 Washington shots.
Alex Ovechkin lead the way for the Capitals, scoring an incredible power play goal from the top of the circles. This time, he lead the rush into the zone and fired the puck through the Rangers defenseman and into the upper corner over Lundqvist's shoulder. Ovechkin played out of his mind tonight firing 6 shots on net. He wasn't credited with any hits, but he was very physical and was out almost every other shift.
It was a fantastic Game One that has set up the intensity rest of the series.
