Tough game. Henrik Lundqvist ruined the planned parade for Joe Thornton's return to the lineup by continuing his dominant play. There's a strong possibility that King Henrik is amazing.
Here's a quote from the bench boss after the game.
"The power play seemed to sort itself out."
I found this quote by Todd McLellan odd, considering everyone knows that the power play didn't just sort itself out. To me that's s statement made to avoid acknowledging the value of Thornton to the specials teams unit
Thoughts:
- Melker Karlsson: It's hard not to love what this guy is bringing the San Jose Sharks right now. He scored another goal on a nice, hard effort after James Sheppard's initial shot and just never stops working. Every time he steps on the ice he gives the team another reason to keep him around.
- Patrick Marleau: This poor guy is deep into the worst slump of his career but spent some quality time with Joe Thornton last night - to no avail. I didn't like then move to Thornton's line because McLellan removed Joe Pavelski. Joe to Joe is the best combination the Sharks have. I understand why Marleau went with Thornton, but the result was too much of an anti-chemistry shuffle. I still think a little trip to the third line wouldn't hurt - especially if the coach plans on keeping the Joe's separated to boost Marleau. Not a good idea.
- Antti Niemi: Niemi had a solid game. He has his shaky parts but he was solid for the majority of the night. Its not his fault when the guys in front of him blow their assignments. It's a refreshing performance after a tough week.
- Joe Thornton: He had an impact, dominated possession and was a confidence boost for everyone else.
The game was a nice back and forth contest by two talented teams that finished with the Rangers holding a slight advantage in 5v5 shot attempts. It was the type of game the Sharks needed after a disappointing four games and - even though it was a loss - is one they can build off as they look to keep in the playoff race.

I know - he's on IR.
Does that change his projected use on the team? I don't think so. I think all it does is give them a legitimate reason to sit him. Watching less effective players play in front of him doesn't teach him anything but anger management.
Has he gotten experience? Absolutely. Has his confidence been beat down like an abused animal? Potentially. Will he play a regular role when he returns from injury? Probably not.
Stop the madness. When he comes back from injury do the right thing, Doug. #FreeMirco
The Sharks next game is Tuesday against the Coyotes. They need to focus on ensuring they get two points from a team in the McDavid race. The Western Conference is a tight race right now for the 6-9 seeds.
