I know many are calling McDavid a generational player, and I know the pressure will be intense to take him number one. I also feel with all the luck the Edmonton Oilers have gotten over the past few years the chances of them getting the number one overall pick again feel remote...
But should the ping-pong balls fall where they may, and the Oilers find themselves once again in position to take the first pick overall, should they consider moving it...for say the third pick overall?
This group of Oilers finally appears to have some chemistry. They've been playing very hard since their coaching change and are coming together. They are in dire need of a top-flight defenseman, possibly even two such players. If the right team is in the right spot the amount of prospect you can get to go along with the third or fourth pick is going to be incredibly tempting.
I know many out there will say the Oilers should just trade one of their current stars and take McDavid. While that does make sense, it also makes sense to try to keep this group together and try to go into next season with some actual momentum. Some continuity upfront wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for this group of players..
And the return could be incredible....giving Edmonton not just a top flight New draft pick but a second young defenseman to help right now. With the Oilers be better off by making such a move?
