The Ottawa Senators have selected Thomas Chabot from the Saint John Sea Dogs with the 18th overall selection in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft.
Chabot is a puck-moving defenseman who nearly doubled his offensive output from his first to second year of his Quebec League career.
He was compared to Alex Edler in TSN's mock draft.
Bryan Murray said Chabot was on the Senators radar since December.
The Senators then used the 21st pick acquired earlier in the day in the Robin Lehner deal to pick forward Colin White from the US National Team Development program.
The comparable is Brandon Sutter and David Bolland was also mentioned, and you have to think that there will be a lot of questions about whether or not they should have taken Kelowna's Nick Merkley (who I had pencilled into this spot two minutes ago).
White has some injury history (wrist) this season as well as a bout of mono. He seems to be a relatively safe pick but with perhaps limited upside, or at least less than a couple of other maybe higher risk/reward picks might have been.
He is ticketed to play in the NCAA this season.
