Report: Flames Aggressively Working The Phones (Flames)

The Calgary Flames have been very quiet since their season reached its end but that doesn't mean they're not trying to make moves.

GM Brad Treliving and the Flames have been one of the more active teams in trade talks, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Friedman via Saturday Night Headlines: "If you ask teams who is the most aggressive team out there in terms of working the phones one of the main answers is the Calgary Flames. The Flames have told people they will not do anything that jeopardizes their ability to sign Mark Giordano, Sean Monahan or Johnny Gaudreau long-term. They have apparently been asked about Jiri Hudler and from what I understand the team's response was 'with one year before he becomes unrestricted you're going to really have to make it worth while.'"

He set career highs with 31 goals and 76 points last season. His previous highs were 25 goals and 57 points. I'm not confident he can duplicate last season's success and at 31 he's going to start declining soon.

Again, I doubt he is moved and the Flames certainly shouldn't be forcing him out the door but if the right deal presents itself they should take it.

As for the Flames actively working the phones it is hardly a surprise.

They have a good, young core in place and some cap space to work with - although they can't take on too much money long-term - and if they add a couple quality pieces they should be able to duplicate last season's success and try their luck in the playoffs once again.

Draft picks are never sought after as highly as they are around the draft and the Flames have nine of them including six in the top-3 rounds. The Flames also have some good prospects in their system so they certainly have the ammunition to make some noise in the coming weeks.

We'll find out if they do.
