The Detroit Red Wings are done signing free agents but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the team is done making moves.
With a glut of NHL-caliber forwards, Detroit general manager Ken Holland indicated that it would not be out of the question that the Wings might put together a package at some point before the start of the 2016-17 NHL season to garner a defenseman.

“We’ve got an excess of forwards. You’d love to get a top three defenseman. I don’t know if one will ever be available via trade.…
A defenseman whose name continues to pop up in trade rumors and could be at the top of Detroit’s wish list might be Cam Fowler of the Anaheim Ducks. Though born in Windsor, Ont., Fowler’s family moved to Farmington Hills, Mich. before Cam’s second birthday and he was raised in Michigan. Fowler regularly works out in the summer months with Red Wings players in the Detroit area.

Winning Recipe The future of the Wings is currently on display at the club’s development camp in Traverse City, Mich. but the skills that they are being tested on are not limited to on-ice action.
Part of the four-day training session will include a cooking tournament, as the team seeks to teach the up and comers life skills to accompany their budding hockey abilities.
“This is an education week,… Holland explained. “Some of these guys are turning pro and have never cooked.
“We’re going to have a media session, and nutrition with (Red Wings team dietician) Lisa McDowell. It’s for them to understand to play pro hockey it’s a job.
“When you play amateur hockey, you’re playing for the fun of the game, the love of the game. To play pro hockey, you’re playing for the love of the game but you’re also going into an industry where the people in that industry, that’s how they make their living.
“If you want to play in the NHL, you ultimately have to live and be like a pro. It’s 365 days a year. It’s decisions about what you eat. It’s decisions about how you’re training. You’ve got decisions to make and they’re at a real important stage in their life, a development stage.
“We’re just trying to give them as much education as we can, and they obviously have to take that education and put it to use.…
Alumni Game The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Thursday that there will be a Leafs-Red Wings alumni game as part of the Jan. 1 Centennial Classic between the two teams at Toronto’s BMO Field.
The date and time of the game will be announced later.
