Quick poll on what Canes should do with #5 pick (Jeff Petry)

Yesterday, I posted another round of my thoughts on the Canes and the #5 pick.

I also posted a short 2-question survey on Twitter and am in process of collecting results that I will post in a blog either tonight or tomorrow.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have ideas and some scribbling for a short series of blogs to explore the Canes options to add a top 4 defenseman to replace Andrej Sekera. Yesterday's Canadiens re-signing of Jeff Petry for 6 years at $5.5M/year sets a price (and a very high one) for what free agent defensemen will cost this summer.

There are 2 possible implications for the Canes:

1) With the price rising and the options decreasing for free agent defensemen, I think it makes it even more likely that the Canes will turn to the trade market for this need. I actually think that there are more options through that path because of some team/player specific situations.

2) Might it also make using the #5 overall pick on a defenseman (Hanifin seems to rate most highly, but Provorov could be the sleeper/wild card) even more desirable, so the Canes can quickly work toward not having to shop the overpriced and understocked defenseman market each summer?
