In a game that had more twists and turns than Lombard Street with a few jaw dropping moments mixed in for good measure including the fastest two goals scored in NCAA Tournament history when BU scored :04 apart in the first period, the Providence College Friars, the last team to qualify for the tournament, defeated Boston University after a dramatic third period rally to win 4-3 in front of a sold out crowd at TD Garden in Boston and become the 2015 NCAA National Champions.
In short, the game boiled down to goaltending. Providence's Jon Gillies (CGY) weathered the storm and made 49 saves on the night with several of the spectacular variety. On the flip side, BU's Matt O'Connor was getting it done until a mental gaff in the third period where he bobbled a dump in from center ice, dropped the puck and scored on himself without a Friar in the zone that tied the game at three with 8:36 left in regulation. Less than a minute later, Brandon Tanev (younger brother of Vancouver's, Chris) scores off the face-off to take the 4-3 lead and that's how it would finish as we have back-to-back-to-back first time National Champions for the first time since 1948, 1949 and 1950 - the first three years of the tournament.
