Let’s say that scouting in Philadelphia was the smart way to achieve hockey trade ‘slight of hand’. With all the reports that Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff and scouts were in Philadelphia, the rumour mill went into overdrive. It’s smart because the Flyers have long wanted to be linked to defenseman Dustin Byfuglien if not have him on the roster already.
But two things have come to light and through two sources-- One close to the Flyers and another via HockeyBuzz.com's own John Jaeckel -- the Jets and Blackhawks have once again been linked. Old friends never stray to far.
With Duncan Keith out four-to-six weeks and the Blackhawks already not enthralled with their bottom-pairing are they looking for an improvement? One Paul Postma of the Winnipeg Jets may be that player who the Hawks are pursuing, or at the least showing interest in.
Postma is a curious situation with the Jets as he has a two-year deal starting this year but seems to find himself not getting the ice time many feel he is deserving. In some ways he is like the back-up quarterback everyone wants to see play but is hardly going to be a difference maker. That might be an underestimation of Postma’s potential but as it stands now he’s a solid No. 5 defender if given the chance.
That’s not going to replace Keith, heck few will so why even talk about it but depth is good, unless there is something bigger going on…
Yes, cue the Byfuglien rumours.
I don’t have any info but would Buff take a a discount on his next deal to be re-united with his old team? Could the Blackhawks even swing this with their cap situation? Something would have to be coming back to Winnipeg, something of substance in terms of salary.
Until Byfuglien is either signed or traded the speculation will continue and I can’t see Winnipeg jettisoning the player to a key conference rival so early in the season. Postma on the other hand makes sense but what would come back?
More as it happens.
