Yesterday's trade between the Penguins and Blackhawks was as much about the salary cap as about hockey, although the Pens very much wanted to add Trevor Daley's speed and puck-moving ability to the beleaguered defense. Today I'm hearing that the Penguins may not be done yet adding defensemen, although the rumored player of interest -- a veteran two-way Dman -- would take significant salary cap juggling and would not be cheap to acquire.
The Coyotes received a blow on Tuesday, as starting goalie Mike Smith underwent core muscle surgery and will be out 8 to 10 weeks. Arizona has Anders Lindback as a backup, but might make inquiries on available UFA rental options like Ben Scrivens or Anton Khudobin, who are both in the AHL.
Arizona also completed a minor deal with the Montreal Canadiens, exchanging forward Lucas Lessio for Christian Thomas.
