Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin scored his 50th goal of the season earlier in the first period of tonight's game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Ovechkin took a slick pass from Evgeny Kuznetsov and took a wrist from the top of the slot through goaltender Cam Ward.
Ovechkin has now scored 50 goals six times in his NHL career. Only Wayne Gretzky and Mike Bossy have scored more 50 goal seasons with nine each.
The 50th goal was also historic for the Capitals franchise as Ovechkin tied Peter Bondra for first the Caps' all-time goal leaders list with 472.
